This was my question, and I finally found a dealer that was able and willing to answer. In the old days, standard motor oil was used with gasoline. The mechanic said that the old rule of thumb was to add an 8 ounce coke bottle of oil to a gallon of gas (128oz/8oz, or 16/1). Modern 2 cycle lubricants are better, so less oil is needed.

The gas/oil ratio on this saw calls for 16:1. that is 8oz of oil per gal. Have run it that way for years, since buying it used in 76 or 77. Cut about 8 cords a year with it and it has been a good say, a little ragged, but gets the job done.
